Adventure Engagement Photographer Colorado: A Surprise Proposal Story in the Mountains

When I first planned this Colorado trip, it was all about a concert at Red Rocks and a week in Denver with friends and siblings. But every time I announce my travel dates as an adventure elopement and destination wedding photographer, something special unfolds.
I connect with people who are local to the places I’m visiting, stories align, and photography naturally finds its way into the trip. That’s how this Colorado series started, with an engagement session at Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder and a family photoshoot at South Valley Park.
But this time, the most meaningful story was personal.
My brother had been ring shopping. Quietly. Thoughtfully. And he asked me to help him plan a surprise proposal on their 14th anniversary as a couple. They are high school sweethearts, the kind of love that grows alongside you. A scenic Colorado adventure with friends and family felt like the perfect way to mark a new chapter.
This time, instead of planning a rigid proposal timeline, we let life lead.

Surprise Proposal at Rainbow Lakes Trailhead, Colorado

We decided on a flexible day trip to Breckenridge. I mapped out a handful of scenic stops and short treks, knowing that the right moment would make itself apparent. That approach was different than what I lean into as an adventure engagement photographer in Colorado and beyond. But to avoid Stephanie's rising suspicion, I knew this proposal would need to feel spontaneous.
Rainbow Lakes Trailhead was quiet and fresh, blanketed in soft snow under full sun. The kind of place that feels hushed without feeling empty. We started hiking together as a group, laughing, taking it all in, and when my brother gave us the subtle go-ahead, we stayed back.
She had no idea.
Watching it unfold from a distance was surreal. No crowd. No rush. Just the two of them in the snow, fourteen years of history meeting a single life-changing question. It was simple, emotional, and deeply theirs.
Afterward, we took a few photos along the trail on our way back to the cars, wandered into a Christmas tree farm without planning it, and eventually continued to Breckenridge for beers, warmth, and celebration. That is what adventure engagement photography looks like to me: letting the day breathe and documenting what naturally wants to happen.

Garden of the Gods Engagement Photos at Sunset in Colorado Springs

Two days later, we drove to Colorado Springs for sunset engagement portraits at Garden of the Gods. This location had been on my photography bucket list for a long time, and somehow it became part of my brother’s engagement story.
The scale of the landscape, the way the light wrapped around the red rock formations, the stillness that arrives right before the sun disappears. It was even more magical than I imagined, which is what keeps me on the lookout for adventure engagements, elopements, and weddings. The landscape does not overpower the story. It holds it.
Photographing them there felt like hitting many goals at once, as a traveler, a nature-lover, a photographer, and a big sister.

Why Adventure Engagement Photography in Colorado Feels Different

Colorado invites movement. It encourages flexibility. It rewards couples who are willing to explore and open to beauty when it happens naturally. Whether it’s an engagement session, an elopement, or a wedding day that prioritizes experience over production, adventure photography here is about trust and presence. The same approach I bring to adventure elopements and weddings across Colorado and wherever my travels take me next.
It was hard to keep my cool that day. Watching your younger brother, your favorite person, step into this next chapter full of love and hope is everything you wish for as a big sister. I’m endlessly grateful I got to be part of it, camera in hand, heart wide open.
