There is a version of the Amalfi Coast that most people never see. It happens before the tour buses arrive, before the shop shutters roll up, before the day boats start crowding the water. It is quiet, soft, and entirely yours if you know when to show up.

I got to experience it for the first time this year, photographing Lissette and Sean's sunrise engagement session through the town of Amalfi. I first photographed this couple back in 2017 for their wedding in Puerto Rico, so being invited to capture this new chapter with them in Italy felt like its own kind of full circle.

This was my second time photographing in Italy, after a surprise proposal in Venice back in 2022, but my first time working on the Amalfi Coast as a travel wedding and lifestyle photographer. I have chased sunrise light in a lot of places, but there is something about this particular stretch of coastline that made the early alarm feel like nothing at all.

Why Sunrise Is the Best Time for Amalfi Coast Photos

Italian cities wake up late, and Amalfi is no exception. The town does not really come alive until well past nine in the morning, which means the hour after first light is the closest thing you will get to having it entirely to yourselves. The piers are empty. The water is still. The colorful flags along the coastal walkway catch the early breeze with nobody around to photobomb the shot.

We began right at the water, walking the length of the pier as the town woke up slowly behind us, mountains still soft with morning haze. From there we moved into the historic center, weaving through narrow stone streets, flower-covered stairways, and the quiet piazza in front of Amalfi's cathedral, all without a single crowd to work around.

By the time the shops opened, we ended the session the way any proper Italian morning should begin: with fresh brioche and espresso at a small coffee shop tucked into one of the side streets. It was Lissette and Sean's first time trying real Italian espresso, and watching that reaction alone made the early wake-up call worth it.

What to Know Before Booking an Amalfi Coast Sunrise Session

If you are dreaming of your own sunrise session here, a few logistical notes will make the planning much easier.

1. Stay the night before in Amalfi itself. Sunrise waits for no one, commuting in from another town along the coast in the dark is rough and expensive: rideshare, ferries and buses are not available in the early morning.
2. Skip the car. Amalfi is best reached by ferry if you are traveling with luggage, or by the SITA bus for daily trips between the different coastal towns. Driving and parking here is genuinely complicated, and the road itself is narrow and winds along cliffs, so even short distances on a map can take longer than expected as frecquent stops and traffic jams are regular. Ferries are also seasonal and weather-dependent, so if rough seas are a possibility, have a backup plan.
3. Eat before you shoot, or build breakfast into the session. Since most shops do not open until around nine, plan your coffee and pastry moment as your actual meal rather than assuming you will grab something beforehand.
4. Think about your shoes. The historic center is beautiful and entirely walkable, but it is also full of cobblestone steps, some of them slick with morning dew. Comfortable shoes matter here more than they would in a flatter city, especially if you are working in a dress.
5. Plan for humidity. Even at sunrise, summer mornings on the Amalfi coast can already feel humid by seven, which is worth factoring into hair and makeup timing if touch-ups are part of your plan.

And if you can, build in a buffer day. Amalfi is high season busy in the summer months, and having a little breathing room before your main event gives everyone room to rest and adjust if anything shifts.

This was one of those mornings that reminded me why I love this work. Empty streets, good light, and two people who have found their way back to each other.
