Annapolis Engagement Photographer: Best Locations & What to Expect

Annapolis is one of the best cities on the East Coast for engagement photos. Cobblestone streets, sailboats at sunrise, historic architecture, and waterfront light that does most of the work for you.

I'm Camille Fontz, a destination wedding and engagement photographer based in Puerto Rico. I travel to Maryland and the DMV area regularly, and I've photographed couples all over the area. This guide covers the best spots, when to go, what to wear, and what a real session here looks like.

Best Locations for Engagement Photos in Annapolis

Part of my process is scouting and recommending locations based on each couple's vision and timing. These are the spots I kept going back to.

  1. Annapolis City Dock
The City Dock is the center of it all. Sailboats, open water, historic buildings, and light that bounces off the surface in every direction. At sunrise, before anyone else is around, it's a completely different place. Quiet, golden, and all yours.
Best for: romantic portraits with water and boat backgrounds.
  2. Pinkney Street and the Historic Streets
The narrow rowhouses on Pinkney Street and the surrounding blocks give portraits texture that you can't manufacture. Colorful facades, brick sidewalks, flags, window boxes. Every corner frames a photo differently.
Best for: candid walking shots and couples who want a city feel without looking generic.
  3. The Wisteria Mural
A reliable favorite. The mural adds soft color to portraits and a slightly playful edge to the gallery. It photographs well in flat morning light and tends to stand out.
Best for: a portrait with some visual personality.
  4. William Paca House and Gardens
The formal gardens here are a completely different mood from the waterfront. Manicured hedges, garden paths, dappled green light. Elegant without being stiff.
Best for: couples who want a lush, garden-formal look.
  5. Quiet Waters Park, Sandy Point State Park, and Jonas Green Park
For couples who want something more natural, there are good park options close to downtown:

    • Quiet Waters Park -- wooded trails, open fields, and gardens. Relaxed and natural.
    • Sandy Point State Park -- beach with wide Chesapeake Bay views. Good for a waterfront session with more room.
    • Jonas Green Park -- a quiet waterfront spot, good for intimate portraits.

A Real Annapolis Engagement Session: Kristin and Jorge

Kristin and Jorge hired me for their full wedding weekend in Maryland. We started with a sunrise engagement session in downtown Annapolis the morning before their wedding.

I got there early to walk the route. We started at the State House Cannon while it was still mostly dark and worked our way toward the City Dock as the light came up, then through the historic streets to the Wisteria Mural.

The morning light hit the water and cobblestones exactly right. Kristin wore a white dress and denim jacket; Jorge in navy and khakis. They were easy to photograph together: relaxed, funny, not at all stiff. Some of my favorite frames from the whole weekend came from that early morning spent together.

The next morning, I photographed their wedding at Silver Swan Bayside in Stevensville, MD: a waterfront venue right on the Chesapeake Bay. That post has the full wedding gallery if you want to see how the whole weekend came together.

Why Sunrise Works So Well in Annapolis

Most couples are skeptical when I suggest it. They all come around.

  • The light is soft and golden, especially near the water.
  • Downtown is empty. No one walking through your frames.
  • The calm helps couples settle in quickly.
  • The water reflections disappear once the wind picks up mid-morning.

I always arrive before my couples to plan the route. Most sunrise sessions in Annapolis run 60 to 90 minutes and cover three or four locations within walking distance.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos in Annapolis

The historic setting works best with clean, simple outfits. A few things that photograph well here:

  • Neutrals and soft colors sit well against brick and stone.
  • Navy, white, cream, sage, and blush all work well against the waterfront.
  • Avoid big prints. They pull focus from each other and from the location.
  • Layers add visual interest and are practical for cool mornings.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The cobblestones are beautiful but uneven.

FAQ: Annapolis Engagement Photography

What are the best locations for engagement photos in Annapolis?

Downtown Annapolis has several great spots: the City Dock, Pinkney Street, the Wisteria Mural, and the William Paca House and Gardens. For something more natural, Quiet Waters Park, Sandy Point State Park, and Jonas Green Park are all within easy distance.

What time of day is best for Annapolis engagement photos?

Sunrise. The light is soft, the streets are empty, and the reflections on the water are at their best. Golden hour before sunset is a solid backup option.

How much does an Annapolis engagement photographer cost?

Pricing varies by photographer, session length, and travel. For destination sessions, pricing typically covers travel, a full edited gallery, and a pre-session style consultation. Get in touch for current availability and rates.

Do you photograph weddings in Annapolis and Maryland?

Yes. I photograph both engagement sessions and full weddings throughout Maryland, including the Annapolis area, the Eastern Shore, and the DMV. If you're planning a Maryland wedding, get in touch.

Can I book an engagement session and wedding photography together?

Yes, and it works great! Photographing your engagement session first means we're not strangers on your wedding day. You're more comfortable in front of the camera, I know how you move together, and the wedding gallery is better for it.

How far in advance should I book?

For spring and fall, three to six months out is a safe window. Summer books quickly too. If you have a specific date in mind, reach out early.
