An Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico Wedding That Stopped Me in My Tracks
There are weddings you photograph and weddings you never forget. This one was both.
When Thais and Julio first told me their plan, I knew immediately this was not going to be a typical eight-hour coverage situation. A ceremony at Parroquia Stella Maris in Condado, a reception at the Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico, a live orchestra, mariachis, pleneros, and a guest list that was ready to celebrate all night. I cleared my schedule, said yes to full-day coverage, and got a chiropractic adjustment at Thais's clinic a few days before to make sure I was ready.
Worth every bit of it.
Why the Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico Is Unlike Any Other Wedding Venue on the Island
Before I get into the day itself, I want to talk about the venue, because if you are researching wedding venues in San Juan, the Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico deserves its own conversation.
Located in Puerta de Tierra, just at the edge of Old San Juan, the Antiguo Casino is a neoclassical landmark built in the early twentieth century. From the outside, the pale blue facade with white columns and towering royal palms lining the entrance gives it the kind of presence that makes people stop mid-sentence. From the inside, it is even more remarkable.
The main ballroom features soaring ceilings, ornate white moldings, marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and a wraparound mezzanine balcony that gives the space a sense of drama you simply cannot manufacture. It photographs like a European palace and feels unmistakably Puerto Rican at the same time. There is no other venue on the island quite like it.
For couples who want a formal, elegant wedding in San Juan with real architectural character, the Antiguo Casino sits in a category of its own.
What Makes It Work Photographically
As a wedding photographer, I am always thinking about light and architecture. The Antiguo Casino gives you both. The white walls reflect light beautifully during the daytime portrait session inside the ballroom, and the exterior at dusk, when the building is lit and the palms are silhouetted against the sky, produces some of the most cinematic couple portraits I have ever made. Those are images that look like they belong in a magazine, and they happen naturally because the venue itself is extraordinary.
The Morning: Getting Ready at Home
The day started at Thais's residence, which was already buzzing when I arrived. Her parents, bridesmaids, florists, and what felt like the entire support crew were all there. I moved through the space documenting everything as it unfolded: the tiara being held up to the light, the gown hanging in the window, Thais in front of the mirror, her mother helping with the dress, the quiet moment with her father before they left for the church.
When Thais was fully ready, we did her bridal portraits. She was stunning in a way that felt effortless, which is always the best kind.
An hour before the ceremony, we headed to the church.
Ceremony at Parroquia Stella Maris, Condado
Parroquia Stella Maris is a Catholic church on Ashford Avenue in Condado, San Juan, and it is one of the most requested ceremony venues in the metro area. Its bright white interior, tall windows, and modern yet classic architecture create a ceremony space that is both intimate and grand depending on where you are standing in the room.
Julio was already there when we arrived, and I have to say, he was one of the most relaxed grooms I have ever photographed before a ceremony. We got a few portraits inside the church, including one or two that captured his personality perfectly, and then we waited.
When Thais appeared at the doors, the whole room shifted. The ceremony that followed was everything a wedding ceremony should be: emotional, genuine, and over too quickly.
We had originally planned to take the couple portraits through the streets of Old San Juan after the ceremony. We decided against it and went straight to the Casino instead. That was the right call.
Parroquia Stella Maris as a Wedding Ceremony Venue
For couples planning a Catholic wedding ceremony in San Juan, Stella Maris Parish is worth knowing about. Its location in Condado puts it within easy distance of the major hotels and reception venues in the area, making the logistics of a ceremony-to-reception day straightforward. The interior photographs beautifully in both color and black and white.
Portraits Inside the Antiguo Casino Before the Reception
We arrived at the Casino while the ballroom was still empty, and I went up immediately to document the decor before the guests arrived. What Kute Gifts and Flowers by Alina Armesto had done with the space was extraordinary: tall white floral arrangements with cascading greenery, gold chiavari chairs, champagne linens, candlelight everywhere, and a sweetheart table framed by a mirrored backdrop layered with white blooms. The room looked like it had been styled for a film set.
When Thais and Julio walked in and saw it for the first time, they held onto each other for a long moment. That was one of my favorite frames of the entire day.
After that first reaction, we spent time doing portraits throughout the ballroom and lobby. The white walls, the columns, the mezzanine, the grand arched windows: every corner of the Casino offered something different. Then we moved outside.
The exterior portraits at the Casino are something I want every couple to experience. The long pathway flanked by royal palms leading up to the neoclassical facade, the soft evening light, the building glowing as the sky turned dark behind it.
The Reception at Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico
Once the guests arrived, the Casino came fully alive. The evening moved through all the expected moments and then well beyond them: the first dance on the marble floor under the chandeliers, toasts, dinner, and then the kind of open dance floor that happens when a Puerto Rican family decides it is time to celebrate.
There was a live band. Then mariachis. Then Yuvi Plena brought out the pleneros in full costume and the entire room lost their minds in the best possible way. Koffee Cups kept everyone going with a coffee bar that saw heavy traffic deep into the night.
I have photographed a lot of receptions. The combination of that room and that energy was something else. We did not want to leave.

Cami
