Some weddings are big productions. Some are quiet declarations. Mayzie and Owen's elopement at Copamarina Beach Resort in Guanica was entirely the latter: two people, handwritten vows, and the Caribbean Sea as their witness. Puerto Rico wasn't a random destination for these two. They had visited the island multiple times, fallen in love with it on each trip, and quietly begun dreaming of making it home one day. When it came time to choose a wedding location, nowhere else made sense. And within Puerto Rico, Copamarina Beach Resort in Guanica felt exactly right: secluded, calm, unhurried, and genuinely beautiful without trying too hard.

Copamarina's overwater gazebo is one of the most intimate ceremony settings on the island. It sits at the end of a wooden pier extending into the bay, surrounded by water on all sides, with the hills of Guanica rising in the distance and the Caribbean stretching endlessly ahead. For a couple who wanted their elopement to feel private and meaningful rather than staged, it was perfect.

Getting Ready Together: A Choice That Said Everything

Most couples spend their wedding morning apart. Mayzie and Owen decided to get ready together, and that decision set the tone for the entire day. There were no nerves, no countdown anxiety, just the easy comfort of two people who genuinely like each other, getting dressed for the best day of their lives.

Mayzie's gown was bohemian and lace-trimmed, soft and romantic without being fussy. Owen went in a completely different direction: a cream blazer, jeans, cowboy boots, and a hat that was entirely, perfectly him. When he zipped up her dress, hands steady, the moment was so quiet and so right that it barely needed a photographer at all. I was just lucky to be in the room.

Just before they left for the ceremony, Mayzie surprised Owen with something she had been holding onto for years: a bundle of letters she had been writing to her future husband since high school. As he read through them, years of her younger self's hopes and promises written for someone she hadn't yet met but somehow already knew, his emotions broke open completely. It was one of the most genuinely moving moments I've witnessed in seventeen years of photographing weddings.

The Overwater Bungalow Ceremony at Copamarina Beach Resort

With the afternoon light turning gold, Mayzie and Owen walked out to Copamarina's overwater gazebo for their ceremony. Just the two of them, their officiant, and the sound of water beneath the pier.

They exchanged vows they had written themselves, standing above the Caribbean Sea with the Guanica hills behind them and the sky doing exactly what it does at that hour on the southern coast of Puerto Rico: turning everything warm and soft and completely unrepeatable. The palm trees rustled. The water moved beneath their feet. And just like that, they were married.

There is something about an elopement ceremony that full weddings rarely touch. When there is no audience to perform for, the moment belongs entirely to the two people in it. Mayzie and Owen's ceremony was that, completely.

Golden Hour Portraits on the Grounds of Copamarina Beach Resort

After the ceremony, we had the whole property to ourselves. We wandered through the resort's gardens, past the bougainvillea in full bloom, along the beach, and back toward the pier as the sun dropped lower. Mayzie and Owen were in no rush and neither was I. We weren't chasing shots; we were just following the light and letting the day wind down at its own pace.

The grounds at Copamarina are exceptional for portraits at this hour. The bougainvillea against the fading sky, the wooden pier reflected in still water, the beach with its overwater gazebo structures standing in the distance, the tropical gardens catching the last warm light. Every location on this property becomes something else entirely at golden hour, and we worked through all of it.

There were no forced poses. Mayzie and Owen held each other, walked, laughed, stood quietly looking out at the water. The images document two people completely at ease on one of the happiest days of their lives.
As the night settled in, I left them to enjoy a private dinner on the beach. Some evenings you drive home from a shoot knowing you got something real. This was one of those evenings.
