Elopement Photographers in the Caribbean | A Gay Elopement at Dorado Beach
Some wedding days arrive softly. Others arrive carrying weight, uncertainty, and many moving pieces. Patrick and Martin’s elopement at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, was the second kind. And somehow, it still unfolded with tenderness, grace, and a deep sense of intention.
They chose to elope in Puerto Rico, surrounded by the people who mattered most. No spectacle. No pressure to perform. Just a quiet promise made in a place that felt calm and grounding, even when the days leading up to it had been anything but.
A day that asked for flexibility
The original plan was simple. Arrive, settle in, get married, and begin celebrating. But life had other ideas. Last-minute travel complications had them land just hours before the wedding, along with the news that a family member would not be able to attend.
By the time Patrick and Martin checked in, there had been very little space to breathe. And yet, from the moment I arrived, what stood out most was not stress. It was how intentional they were with each other. They chose presence over panic. Kindness over frustration. Love over everything else.
We adapted. We slowed things down where we could. And the day began to soften.
Getting ready together, quietly
Their getting-ready moments were unhurried and intimate. No rush. No audience. Just the two of them adjusting cufflinks, sharing a smile, taking a breath together, and cracking jokes. These are the moments I always pay the most attention to. They set the emotional tone for everything that follows, and give me a lot of insight into the couple.
Outside, Dorado Beach felt still. Palm trees swayed. The ocean moved at its own pace. It was the kind of setting that gently reminds you that nothing needs to be forced.
Making space for someone who couldn’t be there
When I learned that the family member wouldn’t be able to attend the ceremony, I thought of doing something special. I brought my tripod and lavalier microphones so we could record the ceremony with clean, intentional audio. Not for content, but so Patrick and Martin could share that moment afterward.
We recorded a full video that allowed us to relive every word, every pause, every breath. So one could feel present, even from afar.
An intimate ceremony rooted in presence
Their ceremony itself was simple and heartfelt. A small circle. Words that mattered. Hands held tightly. Even with family members missing and plans reshaped, there was no sense of absence. What existed fully in that moment was love, and it filled the space effortlessly.
Afterward, we gathered for family portraits. There was warmth and connection. Quiet pride. The kind of joy that lives in the eyes rather than the noise.
Newlywed portraits at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
For their couple portraits, we walked the property together. No rigid shot list. Just light, movement, and space. Dorado Beach offers so many pockets of calm. Garden paths. Open lawns. Ocean views framed by palms.
Patrick and Martin moved easily together. Comfortable. Affectionate. Fully themselves. Every frame felt like a continuation of the same promise they had just made.
As the sun dipped lower, the day closed exactly how it needed to. Softly, and without rush. In the end, I escorted them back to their suite, where family members were ready to squeeze every minute together before they embarked on the honeymoon the next day.
Why this day stayed with me
This elopement was not perfect. It was human. It was shaped by real life, by love under pressure, by adaptability and trust. And that is what made it powerful.
As an elopement photographer in the Caribbean, these are the stories that stay with me. Not because everything went according to plan, but because the couple chose each other again and again, no matter what the day brought.
Patrick and Martin did exactly that. And it was so inspiring to see!
