When the Rain Said Yes: Dana & Wes Elope at Royal Isabela, Puerto Rico
Elopement Photography Caribbean | Royal Isabela Resort | Playa Pastillo
My trusty weather apps showed a 0% chance of rain. Not a single cloud in the forecast. And yet... The moment Dana and Wes stepped outside at Royal Isabela, the sky had other plans.
Storms out of nowhere can sometimes be stressful. But standing on the dramatic clifftops of this stunning property on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, surrounded by raw Atlantic energy, my heart actually skipped a beat when Dana looked at me and asked: "Can you work in the rain?"
My gear and I are rain or shine. So we went with it. ❤️🔥 And the rain gave us everything.
Royal Isabela: One of the Caribbean's Most Breathtaking Elopement Venues
Perched on the limestone cliffs of Isabela on Puerto Rico's northwest coast, Royal Isabela is unlike anywhere else I've photographed. It's a world-class golf resort, yes.
But its real magic is in the landscape: sweeping ocean panoramas, lush tropical vegetation, secret bamboo groves, and direct access to Playa Pastillo below. It is, in a word, cinematic.
Dana and Wes had fallen in love with the property before we'd even met. Having photographed here before, I knew exactly why. And I couldn't wait to show them what their session could look like.
The resort offers a site experience that includes access and a golf cart to navigate the expansive grounds. This meant we could cover everything: the high clifftop overlooks, the lush interior paths, the dramatic bamboo tunnel, and the wild Atlantic beach below. It's the kind of location that makes my job feel less like work and more like an adventure.
Planning a Caribbean Elopement: Dana & Wes's Story
Dana and Wes came to me in mid-December with a simple but beautiful vision: just the two of them, a beach, and photographs that told their story. No guests, no elaborate ceremony logistics, the most intimate form of elopement in the Caribbean.
"We love the beach," Wes told me, "but we're open to your guidance. We've never been here before." That openness is such a gift for a photographer. It means I can take you to the light, to the wild edges, to the places most visitors never see.
They chose a full experience starting at the resort's higher grounds and finishing at Playa Pastillo by sunset. I arrived on time, met them at their casita, and we set off together... Not knowing the sky was about to put on the most dramatic show of the week.
The Session: Rain, Raw Light, and Real Romance
We started on Royal Isabela's upper grounds, where the cliffs drop away dramatically to the ocean below. Even under moody skies, the views were staggering. Green hills rolling into the Atlantic, the air thick and alive with the approaching storm. Dana in her flowing white gown and Wes in his blue suit were already a vision before a single raindrop fell.
And then the skies opened. Real, warm, Caribbean rain.
Here's what I've learned after years of elopement photography in Puerto Rico: couples who embrace the unexpected almost always end up with their favorite photos. The rain softened the light in a way golden hour rarely does. It made everything feel urgent and tender and alive. Dana laughed. Wes pulled her close. And I kept shooting.
Playa Pastillo
We made our way down to Playa Pastillo: wild, wide, and gloriously natural. The waves behind Dana and Wes were extraordinary: turquoise water churning with energy, the kind of backdrop that makes you forget there's a camera between you and the moment.
And then, as it so often does in the tropics, the storm cleared. The clouds parted. And we were rewarded with the dreamiest Caribbean sunset I've seen in months: fire and pink and gold across the sky, the couple silhouetted on the golf course above the sea. A perfect ending.
A Note on Rainy Elopement Photography in Puerto Rico
If you're planning a Caribbean elopement and worried about weather: I see you! Puerto Rico's north coast is lush and tropical precisely because it gets a lot of rain. It's part of the island's wild magic.
Rain doesn't ruin elopement photos. In my experience, it elevates them. Stormy light is dramatic. Wet sand reflects the sky. Couples who laugh through a downpour together are showing each other (and the camera) something deeply real.
My equipment is built for the elements, to a certain extent. I'll be there, rain or shine. And the skies almost always clear in time for sunset.
Planning Your Own Elopement Photography at Royal Isabela
Royal Isabela charges a site fee that covers two hours on property and golf cart access, which I highly recommend taking full advantage of. The grounds are vast and varied enough to fill an entire session with completely different looks: cliffside drama, lush jungle paths, intimate beach moments, and wide open sunset vistas.
I recommend a sunrise window to catch the best light of the day with less chance of rain.
