A Family Portrait Session in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

I had the pleasure of reuniting with Anitha and Daniel, a couple I first photographed during their gorgeous 2020 elopement in Puerto Rico. This time as their family photographer in Alexandria, VA. Our travel paths crossed again in this historic town, where they introduced me to the newest member of their family: their gorgeous baby boy.

We spent a beautiful morning moving through the charming streets and harbor of Old Town Alexandria, letting the family's energy guide the session. The historic architecture, brick facades, and cobblestone lanes gave the images a timeless, almost storybook quality... not unlike shooting in Old San Juan, just with slightly cooler weather!

How I Photograph Families with Toddlers and Small Children

As any parent knows, toddlers have their own agenda: and it rarely involves standing still for a camera. Baby A was no exception. He was far more interested in discovering the cobblestones under his feet than in looking at the lens.

So I made a pact with Anitha and Daniel: let him roam. My approach with small children is to follow their lead rather than redirect it. I stay out of their way, move quietly, and let the real moments unfold: the giggles when dad tosses them in the air, the toddler independence walk down the alley, the moment they suddenly decide to join mom and dad mid-hug because, well, they don't want to miss out.

The result? Photos that actually look like your family. Not a performance of your family.

Family Photography Locations in Old Town Alexandria, VA

Old Town Alexandria offers a variety of settings within walking distance of each other, which makes it ideal for a relaxed, unhurried session. Here's how we moved through the morning:

The cobblestone streets near Prince Street set the tone early. The historic rowhouses, flower boxes, and brick-paved lanes create a warm, European feel that photographs beautifully in soft morning light.

The hidden alleyways gave us a more intimate, editorial mood... Especially in black and white. Watching Baby A march down the center of one of these old paths, arms raised, is one of my favorite frames from the entire session.

The waterfront harbor shifted the energy completely. Open skies, boats rocking at the dock, and the gentle sounds of the water in the morning made the family visibly relax. Some of the warmest, most natural moments happened here — the family just enjoying each other against the backdrop of the Potomac.

Why Old Town Alexandria Is Perfect for Candid Family Photos

As a destination photographer who has shot families and couples across the US, the Caribbean, and Europe, I always seek out locations with built-in visual depth; places where the backdrop tells its own story without competing with the people in the frame.

Old Town Alexandria does that naturally. The density of beautiful architecture within a few walkable blocks means you can move through multiple distinct looks in a single session: streets, alleys, gardens, and waterfront. It's versatile without feeling scattered, and the historic character gives images a timeless quality that holds up beautifully for years to come.

For families based in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, or the broader DMV area, it's one of the most rewarding locations I've worked in and one I return to whenever my travels bring me back to Virginia.

Working with Repeat Clients: Documenting a Growing Family

One of the greatest honors of this work is being trusted to document more than one chapter of a family's story. Photographing Anitha and Daniel first as a couple eloping in Puerto Rico, and then as parents navigating a morning in Old Town Alexandria with a baby in their arms... That continuity is something I hold very carefully.

These images will grow alongside this family. The baby who was discovering cobblestones that morning will one day look at these photos and see who his parents were... How they looked at each other, how they laughed, how they looked at him.

That's what candid family photography is really for. And I'm all for it.

Frequently Asked Questions: Family Photography in Alexandria, VA

Where are the best spots for family photos in Alexandria, VA?

Old Town Alexandria is the go-to for family portraits in the area. The cobblestone streets near Prince Street, the waterfront harbor, and the historic brick alleyways each offer a distinct look. Streets feel timeless and charming; the harbor is open and relaxed. A single morning session can move through all three without any driving.

How do you photograph toddlers and small children?

Answer: The short answer: we take some camera-aware pictures, we release before they grow fussy, we play, rinse and repeat! Rather than posing small children, I encourage them to explore while I follow along. Parents interact naturally with their child, and I capture what actually happens... the giggles, the curiosity, and the spontaneous moments of love that no amount of posing can manufacture.

Do you travel to Alexandria, VA for family photography sessions?

Yes! I'm based in Puerto Rico but travel regularly to the Washington DC metro area, including Alexandria VA and Northern Virginia. I take on family portrait sessions when my schedule brings me to the DMV area. Check my availability calendar for upcoming dates near you.

What is candid family photography?

Candid family photography prioritizes real, unposed moments over formal portraits. Instead of telling everyone where to stand, a candid photographer creates the conditions for natural interaction and documents what unfolds — resulting in images that feel alive, personal, and true to who your family actually is.

How far in advance should I book a family session?

Because I travel to the DC and Virginia area on a set schedule, I recommend booking 4–8 weeks in advance to secure a spot during one of my upcoming visits. Fall foliage and spring sessions fill the fastest.
