Jefferson Memorial Family Photos: Washington DC Family Photographer
Photographing a family I’d previously captured as a couple brings me the deepest sense of connection. I arrive familiar with their energy, only to see that bond grow when I witness them with their child.
That’s exactly how it felt meeting Desi and John at the Jefferson Memorial for their Washington DC family session.
I first photographed these two at their beach wedding in Puerto Rico. It was a small, heartfelt ceremony at their family home, filled with warmth and people who truly cared for each other. Those are the moments that make every early morning and long flight worth it.
Five years later, there we were again: the same couple, a new chapter, and now with the most adorable little boy.
A Four-Session DC Trip I’ll Never Forget as a Destination Photographer
This session at the Jefferson Memorial wrapped up four shoots in one single trip to DC, bringing back all the reasons I love destination weddings and lifestyle photography.
It started with an engagement session right here at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial — the columns, the Tidal Basin light, that golden afternoon glow that DC does better than almost anywhere. Then came Elizabeth and Juan’s wedding at District Winery, one of the most stunning waterfront wedding venues in the DMV. After that, a family session with Desi, John, and their kid, and another family session in Georgetown, coming soon to the blog.
Four sessions. Four families. Four completely different love stories told in one visit to the city.
A Happy Sunset: Family Portrait Photographer in Washington, DC
My job is a constant reminder of all the important, fleeting moments in life worth celebrating. Of course, there will always be hardship, grief, and pain along life's path. Still, we must seize the time we have with our loved ones and celebrate the relationships our journey has gifted us with.
With Desi, John, her parents, and their newest member, it felt extra special. I’ve watched their love bloom since they chose each other in front of their loved ones, and now I get to see them share life with their cute boy: every day, with patience, laughter, and a love that speaks for itself.
I watched John lift their little one into the air, with the Washington Monument in the background. I saw Desi laugh with her head thrown back. The three of them walked the Tidal Basin path together, tiny shoes keeping up with big ones.
Those are the moments that matter most. I'm so glad I was chosen to document these in such a candid way.

Why the Jefferson Memorial Is One of DC’s Best Spots for Family Photos
If you’ve never been to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial during golden hour, put it on your list immediately, whether you’re a photographer or not.
The white marble columns create a naturally stunning backdrop that doesn’t compete with your subjects. It’s grand without being cold, iconic without being overdone. The Tidal Basin wraps around the memorial and catches the light in a way that feels almost cinematic, and the wide open paths around the water give you room to move, to walk, to just be... Which is exactly what you want when you’re photographing a family with a toddler.
Parking and access are easy. The open grounds mean kids can run. And because it’s a landmark rather than a private venue, there’s no permitting stress for portrait sessions.
It’s no wonder it’s one of the most searched photo shoot locations in Washington, D.C., and one of my personal favorites in the entire DMV area.
Planning Your Jefferson Memorial Family Photos
If you’re planning a Washington, D.C. family photography session and considering the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, here’s what I’d tell you:
- Time of day matters. Late-afternoon light wraps around the memorial in summer, especially the last 90 minutes before sunset. Early morning sessions work even better too if you prefer softer light and fewer tourists. Most kids are happier early in the day, which works great for us, too.
- Dress for the monument, not against it. The white marble is bright and neutral, which means most color palettes work well. Jewel tones, earthy greens, soft blues... All photograph beautifully here! Desi’s green floral dress was perfect.
- Plan to move around. Some of my favorite shots from this session weren’t at the memorial itself — they were along the Tidal Basin path, with the Washington Monument in the background and warm evening light coming from the side. Don’t feel like you have to stay glued to the columns.
- Bring snacks for the little ones. And for mom, too. Truly. Game changer.
