I spend most of my time shooting destination weddings, couples flying into Puerto Rico from somewhere else to say their vows against our diverse tropical and historic backdrops. So when Janice and Frederick, both boricuas living away from home, asked me to photograph their wedding at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, it felt different in the best way. Vows and toasts in Puerto Rican Spanish, and a room full of people who had known this couple for years. And after more than a decade together, they were finally taking this step.

It was also my first time photographing a full wedding day at MAPR, and if you're considering this venue for your own celebration, I want to walk you through exactly what a day here looks like.

Getting Ready at Hotel Caribe Hilton

The morning started at Hotel Caribe Hilton, in the Honeymoon Suite on the Wave Wing. Soft ocean light poured through those windows all morning, which made for some of my favorite quiet, unhurried getting ready photos of the day. If you're planning a MAPR wedding and want a getting ready location nearby with that kind of natural light and a little luxury, Caribe Hilton is worth a serious look.

First Look by Fortín de San Gerónimo

Before heading to MAPR, Janice and Frederick shared their first look on the eastern ocean terraces of Caribe Hilton, with Fortín de San Gerónimo rising out of the water just behind them. It was windy enough that Janice's veil had a mind of its own most of the morning, but the setting made every gust worth it, waves breaking against centuries old fort walls with the San Juan coastline stretched out in the distance.

If you're getting ready at Caribe Hilton and want a first look spot with a little more privacy and a view unlike anywhere else in San Juan, these terraces are hard to beat. It also meant that by the time we arrived at MAPR, Janice and Frederick had already had their quiet moment together, which let them walk into the ceremony fully present for everyone waiting on them.

Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico: Ceremony at the Pond in the Jardín Botánico Escultórico

Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico has one of the most striking ceremony backdrops in San Juan, and it's not the museum building itself. It's the Jardín Botánico Escultórico, the sculpture garden tucked behind the museum, and specifically the estanque, a koi pond framed by lily pads and tropical greenery.

Janice and Frederick's ceremony took place right at the water's edge, with a simple white arch dressed in greenery and soft white florals by Hamsell Santos. The garden does most of the visual work here, so the design stayed intentionally understated, which is exactly the right call for this space. Guests were seated along the stone path facing the pond, and the ceremony had this quiet, almost secluded feeling despite being minutes from Santurce's busiest streets.

This was my first time shooting a ceremony in this exact spot, and I can already tell you it's going to become one of my favorite ceremony places in San Juan to photograph. The water lilies, the reflections, and the fact that I have a multiple vantage points to shoot from... Priceless!

One of the sweetest parts of the day happened here too. Watching a naturally shy Janice light up under the humor and easy charm of an outgoing Frederick, and seeing the two of them shift and settle into each other throughout the ceremony, was something I felt lucky to witness through the lens.

Portraits in the MAPR Sculpture Garden and Bamboo Grove

After the ceremony, we moved through the rest of the Jardín Botánico Escultórico for portraits. The bamboo grove on the property is dramatic in the late afternoon, tall stalks catching the light in a way that turns even a simple portrait into something painterly. From there we crossed the wooden bridge on site, another spot I'd recommend to any couple planning portraits here, it gives you a completely different backdrop than the garden or the museum entrance without ever leaving the grounds.

We closed out portraits at the MAPR main entrance, with its columns and neoclassical facade giving Janice and Frederick's black tie look the kind of formal, editorial backdrop that photographs beautifully in golden hour light.

Reception in the Gran Salón

The reception took place in the Gran Salón del Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, a space that can comfortably hold a room this size, 68 guests, while still feeling intimate. The color palette carried through beautifully here, blue and white with blush floral accents from Hamsell Santos draping the head table and centerpieces throughout the room.

Double Cake built a cake that matched the palette down to the sugar flowers, and Midnight Band kept the room moving all night while Sky Events handled the lighting and DJ transitions between sets. One of the bridesmaids stepped in as officiant, which gave the whole day an even more personal feeling, someone who actually knew this couple's story standing up there with them.

The moment that stayed with me the longest happened on the dance floor. At one point, guests moved the party over to the tables so a loved one who couldn't stand for long could still be part of the dancing. Nobody asked them to do that. It just happened, the way generosity tends to happen at the best weddings.

Why Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico Works for a Wedding

If you're weighing MAPR against other Santurce venues, here's what stood out to me after shooting a full day there. The Jardín Botánico Escultórico gives you a ceremony backdrop that feels private and lush without leaving San Juan. The Gran Salón is large enough for a reception this size without losing intimacy. And the museum's architecture and landscaping, from the columned entrance to the sculpture garden pathways, gives a photographer an enormous range of backdrops within a single property, which means fewer venue changes and more time actually enjoying your day.
