I should’ve taken more photos: Couple Portraits at Retiro Park, Madrid
Versión en español, aquí.
In December 2024, my wedding photography business celebrated its 16th anniversary. That same year, I also celebrated my unforgettable wedding day.
These milestones and other personal moments sparked a profound awakening in me, redefining how I see myself and, consequently, how I approach my photography business and craft.
I Should Have Taken More Photos
When Bad Bunny announced the title of his latest album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos (I Should Have Taken More Photos), I felt an immediate connection to the sentiment of nostalgia.
There was a time when my camera was an extension of my body. But in recent years, I only used my cameras for business projects. Under the guise of "being present," I had stopped using this vital tool for my personal life: preserving essential memories. My camera has always been my way of being present, observing, studying, and experiencing life.
A few years ago, I told a photographer friend I wanted photos of my grandmother and mother. I never found the time to make it happen, and sadly, my grandma passed away before we could take those photos together. That loss left a profound mark on me, changing how I view photography and its value. Without realizing it, I had become the tragic cliché: "The shoemaker's children go barefoot."
The Power of Documenting
During this period of reflection, I was fortunate to meet a group of people passionate about music, art, and photography. They don't just live every moment to the fullest but also ensure they document it. "Do you have photos from last night? Send them all, even the bad ones!" is a common mantra among us.
Their enthusiasm inspired me to return to my roots and capture meaningful moments simply for the joy of remembering them.
A Photoshoot at Retiro Park in Madrid
As part of this newfound inspiration, we ended the year in Spain with this chosen family. Months in advance, I announced that I would bring my professional photography equipment, ready to create my memories.
My dear friend Malau (whom I love dearly and who didn't force me to write this in my blog) said, "I want photos in the boats at Retiro Park!"
The day arrived: a chilly and cloudy but romantic moment at Madrid's iconic Retiro Park.
Couple Photos at Retiro Park in Madrid, Spain
We started with a couples' session for Malau and her sweetheart, Vicente, but soon, everyone in our group joined in, enjoying the boats and capturing unforgettable memories. It was a beautiful experience that combined friendship, creativity, and the simple pleasure of being together.
This trip wasn't just an opportunity to explore a stunning destination but also to reconnect with the reason I began photographing in the first place: to preserve stories, moments, and emotions that define us.
I renewed my commitment to the idea that photos aren't just for clients but for me. My resolution for 2025 is to never forget this lesson and to continue creating memories for those who hire me and my own life. Because, at the end of the day, we carry memories with us.
Here are some photos that were a testament to our friendship and the time we shared.
Love you all: Malau, Vicente, Robin, Ray, Kalajan, Jessica, and especially the cutest boat rower, JC. <3
