A Planned Beach Proposal at Playa Pastillo, Isabela
There is something about Playa Pastillo that stops you in your tracks the moment you arrive. The cliffs rising out of the water. The palms leaning toward the shore. The wide stretch of sand that feels like it belongs to no one and everyone at once. It is one of those beaches in Puerto Rico that does not need a filter, a caption, or a reason.
Roger and Rui found their way here from Boston, drawn to the northwest coast of the island and the kind of landscape that feels cinematic without trying. They had seen the cliffs, the palms, and that dramatic shoreline on my portfolio, and they wanted exactly that for their session: raw, tropical, and completely their own.
This was not a surprise. They planned it together, the way some couples do, quietly and intentionally, the way a proposal can also be a promise made out loud between two people who already know. Roger had the ring. Rui knew it was coming. And somehow, when the moment arrived at the edge of the ocean at Playa Pastillo, it still took our breath away.
About Playa Pastillo in Isabela, Puerto Rico
Playa Pastillo is a public beach located in Isabela, on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, near the private resort of Royal Isabela. What makes it visually distinct is the combination of dramatic limestone cliffs covered in tropical vegetation, a wide arc of golden sand, and water that shifts between turquoise and deep blue depending on the light.
Because it is tucked away and less trafficked than better-known beaches on the island, it offers something rare: space. Room to breathe, to wander, to let a moment unfold without an audience. For couples looking for a beach proposal location or pre-wedding session that feels private and untouched, Playa Pastillo delivers in a way few spots in Puerto Rico can.
The cliffs at the eastern end of the beach are a natural anchor for portraits. The palms that line the shore give you shade, framing, and texture. And the long stretch of open sand means you can photograph in multiple directions without repeating yourself.
The Proposal
We met at the parking entrance just as the late afternoon light was starting to soften. Roger and Rui were easy to be around from the first moment, the kind of couple that makes your job feel less like work and more like the thing you showed up for.
We walked along the beach, settling into the rhythm of the session before the proposal happened. When Roger dropped to one knee, the cliffs behind them, the Atlantic in front of them, and Rui's dress catching the wind off the water, I was ready. It is one of those frames that locks itself into your memory the way only real moments can.
She said yes. They laughed. They held each other. And then we spent the rest of the golden hour walking that gorgeous stretch of sand like they owned it.
Pre-Wedding Photos at Playa Pastillo
What followed the proposal was one of my favorite parts of this kind of session: the after. The exhale. The moment when the ring is on and all that planning and anticipation transforms into pure joy, and two people just get to be together in a beautiful place.
Roger and Rui were naturals. They played in the waves, chased each other across the sand, spun, laughed, leaned into each other against the cliffs. The late afternoon light at Playa Pastillo has a quality that feels like it was designed for this exact kind of session, warm and soft and endlessly flattering.
Pre-wedding photography in Puerto Rico has become one of my most requested services, and sessions like this one are exactly why. The island offers a backdrop that is hard to replicate anywhere else, and Playa Pastillo, with its cliffs and palms and wild shoreline, sits at the top of my list of favorite locations on the northwest coast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Playa Pastillo in Puerto Rico?
Playa Pastillo is located in Isabela, on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, near the private Royal Isabela resort. It is a public beach accessible from the main road and is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, palm-lined shore, and wide stretch of golden sand.
Is Playa Pastillo a good location for a beach proposal in Puerto Rico?
Yes. Playa Pastillo is one of the most visually stunning and least crowded public beaches on the island. The combination of cliffs, palms, and open shoreline makes it an ideal location for a beach proposal or pre-wedding photography session, especially during golden hour.
Do you photograph planned and surprise proposals in Puerto Rico?
Absolutely. Not every proposal is a surprise, and planned proposals are just as meaningful and beautiful to photograph. Whether you are planning together or keeping it a secret, I work with you to make sure the moment is captured exactly the way you envisioned it.
What should we wear for a beach pre-wedding session in Puerto Rico?
Flowing fabrics work beautifully at the beach because they move with the wind and add visual interest to the photos. Soft, neutral tones or a single pop of color photograph well against the sand and cliffs. Avoid busy patterns or matching outfits that feel overly coordinated. Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and like yourselves in.
How far in advance should I book a pre-wedding or engagement session in Puerto Rico?
I recommend booking at least two to three months in advance, especially if you are planning around a specific date or traveling to the island. Popular seasons and weekends fill up quickly, so the earlier you reach out, the better.
