Thanksgiving week is always magical in Puerto Rico. Cruise ships fill the harbor, families reunite, and couples arrive seeking adventure and romance under Caribbean skies. This November, I had the honor of photographing Max's surprise proposal to Jenna, a heartfelt moment seven years in the making.
Planning the Perfect San Juan Proposal
When Max first reached out about his proposal in San Juan, he knew he wanted something iconic: somewhere that captured the romance and history of Old San Juan. We originally planned to capture the moment at El Morro Fortress, one of the most popular places to propose in Puerto Rico. But as any experienced Puerto Rico proposal photographer knows, flexibility is key.
The day before Max and Jenna arrived, I was shooting another session at El Morro and discovered construction materials scattered throughout the fortress grounds, as wall restoration projects have been ongoing over the last year. I immediately reached out to Max with photos and suggested a lesser-known alternative.

The Day of the Surprise Proposal
Max handled the last-minute location change perfectly. He casually walked Jenna past the area earlier that day and suggested they return for sunset photos: a classic move that kept the surprise intact. So sneaky!
As a surprise proposal photographer, I arrived early and waited on a bench under the banyan tree, blending in with other visitors enjoying the late afternoon. Max had sent me a selfie of their outfits and shared their live location via WhatsApp... Essential coordination details that help me capture every moment without spoiling the surprise.
When the golden Caribbean light began to soften, Max arrived to the location, walked closer to la garita, and got down on one knee.
Jenna's reaction was pure joy: tears, laughter, and a glowing embrace that told the story of seven years of love reaching a beautiful new chapter.
Golden Hour Engagement Portraits Through Old San Juan
After the proposal, we wandered through the charming cobblestone streets of Old San Juan for their engagement portraits. The soft sunset light made everything glow:
