Some people bring the sunshine with them.

Not gonna lie, I didn't think we'd make it through this one dry. After a whole week of moody skies and tropical downpours, I met Anthony at Borinquen Beach, fully expecting to get soaked. But from the start of our emails, I could tell he wasn't the type to let a little rain mess up a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Anthony had planned the most romantic surprise beach proposal for his girlfriend Rhaiza, a proud Puerto Rican from Santurce. He wanted their proposal to feel meaningful and relaxed, to happen somewhere surrounded by the raw beauty of Puerto Rico. After some back-and-forth, I suggested one of my favorite beaches in Aguadilla: Borinquen Beach.

Best Beach in Aguadilla for a Surprise Proposal

Borinquen Beach is tucked into a scenic stretch of coastline where golden cliffs rise above vast stretches of sand and crashing waves. It's one of the best beaches in Aguadilla, not just for how picturesque it is, but for the feeling of being wrapped in nature. It offers the perfect blend of privacy and drama, making it ideal for beach engagement proposals and romantic getaways in Puerto Rico.

The original plan was for a golden hour proposal right before sunset, but the weather had its own ideas. In our planning emails, I outlined backup options, including an early sunrise session or arriving earlier in the day to find a window between storms. We decided to keep the original plan and take our chances.

And then... Puerto Rico delivered. Just as I arrived early to scout and set up the perfect spot, the sky began to clear. I laid out my orange picnic blanket (our secret signal), and minutes later, I spotted Anthony and Rhaiza making their way down the beach.

He told Rhaiza that he'd booked a sunset picnic activity at the beach. Upon arrival, he acted confused when he didn't see the picnic, and used this ploy to walk further down the beach until he found the perfect spot. A little bit too far down the coast for my liking, I had to make a run for this one!

I love photographing marriage proposals on the beach because of the honesty of the emotions that always seem to be present. There's no hiding joy here. As Anthony dropped to one knee, I watched the realization bloom across Rhaiza's face: first confusion, then surprise, and finally the happiest laughter and tears.

They embraced. They laughed. The waves crashed. The cliffs stood still for them. And I got to capture all of it.

After the proposal, we spent a few more moments on the beach together. The newly-engaged glow was real. These two radiated love and playfulness in every photo, giving me the kind of magic photographers dream of.

As we wrapped up the session and packed up, the softest drizzle began to fall. The kind that doesn't ruin your hair or your mood, just gently tells you the moment is complete. Nature knew we had what we came for.
