I needed a day like Melwin and Christian's more than they knew. When Melwin reached out asking if I was available to photograph a surprise proposal at the end of the month, I replied with an enthusiastic yes, sent over my information, and we jumped straight into planning a romantic surprise for his beloved Christian.

Planning a Surprise Proposal at the Four Seasons Puerto Rico

One of the things that makes photographing proposals inside a resort so natural is how easy it is to blend in. When a couple is staying at the hotel, I can move around the property looking like just another guest. Nobody suspects a thing. That was exactly the case for Melwin and Christian's proposal at the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Puerto Rico in Rio Grande, a property I know well from years of sessions and celebrations there.

Melwin chose the location where he wanted to propose. I arrived early, found a spot on the terrace, set up my equipment, and tucked everything out of sight. My heart was already racing. I always get nervous at proposals, like somehow I am the one about to get down on one knee.
Then Melwin, Christian, and their adorable little dog Maya arrived, and just like that, everything settled into place. We were ready.

The Proposal

There is something I love about watching someone work up the courage to propose. You can see the whole internal debate playing out in their body language. Some people circle the spot twenty times. Some go quiet mid-sentence. Some just reach into their pocket and go for it.

Melwin planted himself firmly in front of Christian, looked him in the eyes, dropped to one knee, and said words that moved them both deeply. Christian said yes. They held each other for a long time, and I stayed back and let the moment breathe.

After I came over to congratulate them, the hotel staff appeared with champagne, which felt exactly right. Then we made our way through the resort grounds and down to the beach for an engagement session, just the two of them and Maya leading the way. They were so happy. We ran across the sand, laughed a lot, and eventually found a quiet spot on the terrace to sit and just enjoy the evening together.

I left that day with the biggest smile. There is nothing quite like witnessing the beginning of a new chapter in two people's lives.
