A Small Beach Wedding at Playa Azul, Luquillo, Puerto Rico
There is something about Luquillo beach before the rest of the world wakes up.
At 7:00 AM on a Friday in April, Gabriela and My gathered with a handful of their closest family members at Playa Costa Azul in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, for one of the most intimate small beach weddings I have had the honor of photographing.
The Atlantic was loud that morning. The wind was strong, the tides were high, and for a moment the sky could not decide what it wanted to do. Then, right as the ceremony started and we stepped into the coast, everything went sunny and golden. I have thought about that moment many times since.
Luquillo beach is one of those places that does not need much decoration to feel magical. The palm trees lean toward the water like they are listening. The sand is warm even at sunrise. Gaby and My knew exactly what they were doing when they chose this place.
An Intimate Destination Wedding, Rooted in the Island
Gaby is originally from Puerto Rico. My, her now husband, was born and raised in the US with Vietnamese roots, managed a surf shop back in Florida. After meeting online, a mutual friend gave them the last push they needed to try this out.
They have been on adventures together ever since, and now, an elopement on the island where Gaby grew up.
Choosing Puerto Rico for their small intimate wedding was about more than the scenery. It was about family.
Having all four grandparents present at a wedding is rare, and Gaby knew it. The entire guest list was made up of her Puerto Rican family, traveling in from the metro area, the west side of the island, and the east.
My's family could not make the trip, but he was surrounded by the people who raised the woman he was marrying, and that felt right.
The ceremony was officiated by Ministros PR and lasted about thirty minutes. Simple, meaningful, and completely theirs.
The Details That Made This Small Beach Wedding Unforgettable
For a small beach wedding with no formal reception, Gaby and My put real thought into every detail. The color palette was warm and boho, flowing naturally into the environment around them. A vintage surfboard stood at the ceremony site, doubling as a welcome sign. A colorful hand-woven rug served as their aisle. Wicker baskets and pampas grass softened the edges of an already soft morning.
Gaby carried a bouquet of dried palm leaves, pampas grass, and eucalyptus. Tucked inside it was a small pin honoring her father, also a surfer, who passed away a few years ago. My wore a deep sage green linen shirt with a dried floral boutonniere. Their ring box was custom embossed with "My + G."
These were not over-the-top details. They were personal ones, and that is exactly what made them land.
Why Playa Azul in Luquillo Is Perfect for a Small Beach Wedding
Playa Azul sits along the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico, just outside the town of Luquillo. It is quieter than the main public beach kiosks, with a long stretch of sand framed by coconut palms and views of the Atlantic. In the early morning, it is nearly empty.
For couples planning a small intimate destination wedding in Puerto Rico, this beach offers a natural ceremony backdrop without the need for much setup.
There is space for a small group, the light in the morning is soft and directional, and the palm grove just off the sand gives you a completely different set of portraits within a short walk. We moved between the shoreline and the grove throughout the session, and every frame looked like a different world.
Riding the Waves
Love and marriage have many seasons, and sometimes all of them show up on the same day. That morning at Playa Azul felt like proof of that.
The storm came through, the wind pushed the palm trees sideways, and seventeen people stood on that beach anyway because Gaby and My were getting married and nothing else mattered. Then the sun came out, the waves settled, and we had the most beautiful light I could have asked for.
That is what a small beach wedding in Puerto Rico looks like when it is done with intention. Not perfect weather, not a hundred guests, not a grand venue. Just the right people, the right place, and two people who already know how to hold on through the rough parts.
Gaby and My, thank you for having me. Watching your family celebrate you both on the island that raised you was something I will carry for a long time. Felicidades.

Cami
