Intimate and Inclusive: Queer Microwedding in Old San Juan

In the heart of the historic Old San Juan, and under the warmth of a Puerto Rican summer sun, Maritza and KB celebrated their love in a queer microwedding that was as intimate as it was vibrant.

Held at the iconic Hotel El Convento, their special day was a celebration of their union and a testament to the beauty of inclusive love.

Creating Lasting Memories in Old San Juan

As a photographer, my approach was to capture the candid moments, the laughter, the tears, and the unspoken words of love. From the first look in the lobby of El Convento to the intimate portraits taken in the narrow, colorful streets of Old San Juan, each photograph tells a story of love, inclusivity, and joy.

I started my shift by scouting the rooftop ceremony venue, where this was the first time I had photographed a ceremony, even though I've been to El Convento many times. There, KB and Maritza's community did the last-minute touches to the space, securing the sound system, and the florals were all OK to begin the ceremony shortly.

I then went downstairs to meet KB at the lobby for their first look session with Maritza. After we found the perfect space right by the iconic portal of the Hotel, we called Maritza downstairs, where we saw each other for the first time.

After a long embrace filled with emotion, I pulled back so they would have an intimate exchange of vows for each other. After this emotional moment, we went upstairs, where everyone gathered, ready for the rituals to begin.

The Charming Venue: Hotel El Convento

Hotel El Convento, a beacon of elegance in Old San Juan, provided the perfect backdrop for this queer micro wedding. Its rooftop was the perfect, intimate, and quaint space for their ceremony, tucked away from the buzz of the historic city but surrounded by its beautiful architecture.

Their wedding was a communal effort, with guests contributing to the preparations, speeches, readings, and blessings, making the day full of involvement and participation.

After the ceremony ended, we all walked downstairs to photograph the wedding party and family formals in the streets of Old San Juan. When finished, they all left towards the cocktail area, and I kept the newlyweds to myself for a bit longer as we finished their portraits around the block.

A Memorable Reception at Salon Martorell

Their reception, held at Salon Martorell and adorned with its iconic charm, served as an intimate space for the couple to celebrate with their loved ones.

Every time I am at a wedding of a couple like them, who look at each other with the certainty of knowing they are the luckiest people on the planet, I can't help but feel like the luckiest photographer myself.

Maritza and KB's wedding was much more than a celebration. It was a powerful statement of love, equality, and the right to feel safe.

I am grateful that KB and Maritza found each other in this busy world and found in each other what we all deserve: a safe, loving, and prosperous heart to call home. We must fight daily to protect those safe spaces for every person in their communities.

Congratulations to Maritza and KB, and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your beautiful day. Your love story is a beacon of hope and an inspiration to many.

Maritza's Review

10/10 recommend

The entire process was easy, organized. Cami is of course very professional, but she is also very talented, kind and creative! She helped us orchestrate first looks and vows. And then found all the best spots for us to take pictures!

I am obsessed with our pictures (seriously, I'm pulling up the link almost every day and looking at them all over again). We are thankful for all the memories she helped us capture!
