A Caribbean Vow Renewal and Lesbian Wedding in Puerto Rico
Some stories stay with you long after the last photo is taken. Lissette and Luisa’s Caribbean vow renewal at Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan is one of them. These two beautiful souls met young, fell in love, and married quickly. Ten years later, they are accomplished professionals, devoted mothers, and a strong unit that radiates joy wherever they go.
For their tenth anniversary, they decided to give themselves the wedding they never had the first time around. They gathered their closest family and friends, about fifty loved ones in total. They flew to Puerto Rico for a heartfelt vow renewal. The setting could not have been more perfect: the historic walls and Spanish charm of Hotel El Convento.
A Joyful Start: Getting Ready in Hotel El Convento
The day began with the calm excitement that usually marks wedding mornings. Lissette and Luisa got ready together. Instead of sharing a first look, my shift started with a private moment just for the two of them and their little one. In one of the quiet corners of Hotel El Convento, their actions were genuine and emotional, a reminder of how much they have built together over the past decade.
Caribbean Vow Renewal at Plaza La Rogativa, Old San Juan
Surrounded by their guests, Lissette and Luisa walked into the iconic Plaza La Rogativa, just steps from Hotel El Convento, for their vow renewal. The ceremony was non-religious, warm, and filled with love. You could feel the gratitude and admiration from every single person present.
Newlywed Portraits in Historic Old San Juan
After the ceremony, we strolled through the hotel’s historic spaces and the nearby cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. The pastel facades and colorful doors framed their newlywed portraits perfectly. These quiet minutes together gave them a chance to soak in the joy of the day.
Reception Celebration at Hotel El Convento
While their guests enjoyed the cocktail hour, I photographed the décor. Eclectik Events created a romantic setup filled with warmth and elegance. Once the reception began, the celebration unfolded with heartfelt entrances, the couple’s first dance, special dances with the mothers of the brides, and toasts filled with laughter and tender words. The evening continued with music by High Setup and a sweet cake by Vanessa Caro.
As the sun set over San Juan, I felt grateful to be there, camera in hand and heart full.
A Lesbian Vow Renewal with Deeper Meaning
This Caribbean vow renewal was more than a wedding celebration. It was a reflection of how far Lissette and Luisa have come as a couple, as mothers, and as part of a community that continues to fight for equality. Ten years ago, they were blessed with an option that many other couples in our recent history never had in their lifetimes: the right to marry.
The summer of 2015 welcomed marriage equality for same-sex couples in the United States. It may feel normal today, but those rights were not handed out easily. They were fought for, defended, and earned by a community that still faces discrimination, violence, and adversity. Lissette and Luisa’s celebration stood as a joyful reminder of that progress, while also a call to remember that we cannot take it for granted.
Looking around that evening, I saw a family rooted in love, surrounded by friends and an unwavering community of support. Their vows were a promise to each other, but also proof of the resilience and beauty of living authentically.
More than taking photos, my job is in fierce defense of love, of celebrating milestones that once seemed out of reach, and being reminded that our duty is to never lower our guard in uncertain times.
I left Hotel El Convento with the certainty that Lissette and Luisa’s next decade will be just as full of love, resilience, and joy as their first.

Cami
