Arjun and Saline flew in from California with one plan locked in: propose at sunset, by the water, in Rincon. We landed on Domes Beach for the proposal, drawn to the wide open shoreline and the way the light pools behind the rock formations at the north end, close to the Punta Higuero lighthouse.

Traffic out of San Juan pushed their arrival back, and the surf that evening was running rougher than usual. Neither one slowed things down. If anything, the raging water and the late golden light gave the whole scene more drama, like the ocean knew exactly what was coming.

The Proposal

I was already set up near the shoreline, blending in with the regular beachgoers, blanket and all, when I spotted them walking down toward the water. Arjun got down on one knee right where the waves were rolling in. Saline's reaction was immediate, happy jumps, both hands over her mouth, then a long, tender embrace that neither of them seemed to want to let go of.

What followed was one of my favorite parts of the whole session. We walked the shoreline as the sun kept dropping, danced a little in the sand, and let the ocean take the lead behind them. The water stayed rough through golden hour, but it gave every frame a sense of motion, waves catching the last of the light while the two of them stayed wrapped up in each other, giggly and tender the entire time. One of my favorite things of proposal is the big grin that my clients keep throughtout their newly-engaged portraits, relieved after their successful surprise.

Why Domes Beach is one of my favorite spots for Rincon Proposals

Domes Beach faces west, so it catches the full arc of sunset without any buildings or piers breaking up the view. The north end, near the Punta Higuero lighthouse, tends to be quieter than the main surf break, which makes it easier to set up a surprise without drawing attention. The rock formations along that stretch catch the gold light beautifully right as the sun starts to dip, which is part of why I keep coming back to this exact spot for proposals and sessions in Rincon.

I've photographed this same stretch of coastline for maternity sessions as well as elopements and engagement sessions, and it photographs beautifully for all of them, but there's something about catching a couple at the exact second they get engaged on this beach that never gets old.
