Best Places to Elope in Puerto Rico: A Local Photographer’s Guide
As a wedding and elopement photographer in Puerto Rico, I've spent over seventeen years photographing love stories across the Islands.
From barefoot vows on the shores of Culebra to tearful first looks inside the stone walls of El Morro, I've seen couples fly in from across the country —and the world— just to get married here. And I completely understand why.
Puerto Rico is one of the best places to elope in the world. You get Caribbean beauty, American legal infrastructure, no passport required for U.S. citizens, a bilingual wedding vendor community, and scenery that genuinely rivals any other tropical destination in the world.
If you're dreaming of an intimate ceremony, you're in the right place!
How to Elope in Puerto Rico: The Basics
Before we get to the locations, here's what you need to know about the legal side of eloping in Puerto Rico.
Who can get married here: Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so any U.S. citizen can marry here without a passport. Read more info about the marriage license on my updated Puerto Rico marriage requirements article.
Officiant: You'll need a legally ordained officiant, a notary, a minister, or a judge. Many professional wedding officiants in Puerto Rico are bilingual and experienced with elopement ceremonies.
Best time of year: The dry season (December through April) offers the most reliable weather. That said, I've photographed beautiful elopements year-round... We just plan accordingly.
Cost: A Puerto Rico elopement can range from a few hundred dollars for a simple beach ceremony to several thousand for a fully styled micro-wedding with multiple vendors. The beauty of eloping here is that you can keep it as simple or as special as you want.
The Best Places to Elope in Puerto Rico
Here are the locations I return to most, and why I love photographing love stories in each of them.
1. El Yunque Rainforest
El Yunque National Forest is Puerto Rico's most magical elopement location for adventurous couples. It's the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, and it feels like another world entirely: lush green canopy, cascading waterfalls, and a mist that makes every photo look ethereal.
Couples who love hiking, nature, and unconventional ceremonies feel completely at home here. I choose a location for each couple based on their fitness level and vision, but the ceremony usually happens right by the waterfall.
Photographer's tip: Arrive as close to opening times as possible. El Yunque gets crowded and hot by mid-morning, and the soft early light through the forest canopy is unlike anything else.
2. Old San Juan
Old San Juan is where romance meets history. The cobblestone streets, the painted colonial buildings, the ocean glinting at the end of every alley: it creates a backdrop that feels both timeless and distinctly Puerto Rican. I'm always here, and I never get tired of it.
It's also the most logistically convenient elopement location in Puerto Rico. Everything is close together, there are excellent restaurants for a post-ceremony dinner, and the area is full of experienced wedding vendors.
Couples who want a sophisticated, editorial elopement with real personality tend to gravitate toward Old San Juan.
Photographer's tip: Late afternoon light in Old San Juan is extraordinary. Plan your ceremony for the golden hour and you'll have sunset shots along the bay that will take your breath away.
3. El Morro Fortress & Castillo San Cristóbal
Centuries of history are contained within these walls. El Morro Fortress and Castillo San Cristóbal are two of the most dramatic and iconic wedding venues in the entire Caribbean: and they're right here in San Juan.
The scale of the fortresses is humbling, and the views of the Atlantic are stunning. Elopements inside the fortresses have an epic quality to them that nothing else can replicate. You'll need a permit from the National Park Service to hold an event inside.
Photographer's tip: The grassy esplanades outside El Morro are freely accessible and gorgeous at sunset, even without a formal permit. Some of my favorite elopement photos have been taken right there on the lawn.
4. Puerto Rico's Beaches
If there's one thing Puerto Rico has in abundance, it's breathtaking beaches. And when it comes to beach elopements, the options are almost overwhelming, which is actually one of the great advantages!
You can choose a beach that perfectly fits your vision and travel itinerary, whether that's secluded and wild, or calm and easy to get to.
The beaches don't need much in terms of decor. The turquoise water and white sand do all the work. Some of my clients opt for barefoot vows at sunrise, while others prefer a small setup at golden hour with a floral arch and two chairs.
Some favorites: Escambrón Beach (minutes from Old San Juan), Luquillo Beaches (calm waters, convenient and diverse), and Aguadilla Beaches for dramatic sunsets.
5. Culebra & Vieques
Culebra and Vieques are two offshore island municipalities of Puerto Rico, and they are paradise. Flamenco Beach in Culebra is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Vieques has a magical bioluminescent bay and a laid-back energy that feels worlds away from the mainland.
These islands work particularly well as elopement destinations because they double as a honeymoon retreat. You say your vows on one of the most stunning beaches you've ever seen, and then you don't have to go anywhere —you're already there!
Photographer's tip: Getting to Culebra and Vieques requires a ferry or small plane from the mainland. Build in extra travel time and plan your timeline accordingly. The logistics are worth every bit of effort.
6. Cabo Rojo Lighthouse
Perched on dramatic white cliffs on Puerto Rico's southwestern tip, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse is one of the most underrated elopement spots on the island. The surrounding salt flats turn pink at sunset, the cliffs drop dramatically into turquoise water, and the lighthouse itself is a beautiful piece of history.
Couples who want something truly different (not the beach, not the rainforest, not the city) find exactly what they're looking for here. It's accessible with good parking, and the light in the late afternoon is extraordinary.
Photographer's tip: stay past dusk on a clear day to witness the milky way with your bare eyes!
7. Airbnbs, Private Villas & Beachfront Rentals
One of the most popular trends for Puerto Rico elopements right now is renting a private villa or luxury Airbnb for the ceremony and celebration. This approach gives you complete privacy, a beautiful backdrop that is entirely yours, and the flexibility to customize every detail.
Puerto Rico has spectacular rental properties: mountain estates with panoramic views, oceanfront villas with private pools, historic haciendas in the interior.
Some couples use the property as both ceremony location and honeymoon suite, which makes the whole experience feel incredibly personal and relaxed.
8. Sunset Sailboat Elopement
For the ultimate romantic experience, nothing compares to exchanging vows on a private sailboat as the sun drops into the Caribbean. The Old San Juan harbor has several companies that offer private sailboat charters, and the experience of getting married at sea with the city's historic skyline behind you is truly one of a kind.
Photographer's tip: Coordinate with the captain on timing to make sure you're in open water (or at the harbor entrance) for the ceremony itself. The light on the water at golden hour is spectacular!
Ready to Elope in Puerto Rico?
Every couple I've photographed here has told me the same thing afterwards: this island has a way of making everything feel exactly right. The light, the warmth, the energy of the place: it all adds up to something that's genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else.
Whether you're drawn to the rainforest, the city, the beach, or the open sea... Puerto Rico has the elopement location you've been picturing. I'd love to be there to document it.
Let's talk. Head to my contact page, tell me about your vision, and we'll figure out the perfect plan together.
